CRISIL’s primary business is rating of debt instruments. This division constitutes around 2/3 of total turnover of the company. The company rates rupee denominated credit instruments, such as debentures, fixed deposits and commercial papers.
The other divisions of CRISIL are CRISIL Advisory Services (CAS) which provides advisory services in the areas of infrastructure, restructuring and divestment of PSU’s, CRISIL Information Services (CRISIL), which is focussed on providing value added research reports.
CRISIL has launched counter party ratings for intermediaries such as brokers and dealers. It has also started rating debt offerings of municipal bonds, SPV’s created for infrastructure financing and credit enhanced structured products.
It is well placed in the sector commanding a market share of 43%. Its alliance with S&P has increased its international credibility and given it exposure to international methodology and operational skills.
