Zee Telefilms is the pioneer of satellite broadcasting in India. It is India's largest vertically integrated media and entertainment company. Zee has an integrated range of businesses, encompassing the content-to-consumer value chain of media and entertainment business. Zee is a pioneer in India, in every aspect of content aggregation and distribution through satellite, cable and Internet. It is the largest producer and aggregator of Hindi programming in the world, and one of the most popular entertainment brands with more than 30,000 hours of original programming. It was ranked as the ninth most popular brand within a decade of its launch, the largest MSO in India with an estimated reach of 6.5 million households, one of the largest Indian multiple distribution platforms with an estimated reach of 350 million viewers in over 120 countries globally including USA, Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Zee Education began its journey in 1994 as a division of Zee Telefilms Ltd. 'Zee Interactive Learning System' was formed in 1999 to create a learning network and deliver a variety education content and solution for a range of careers and vocations through multiple delivery platforms.
Zee Telefilms Limited, promoted by Subhash Chandra Goel, is engaged in software production for entertainment industry and has exclusive rights to supply software for television programs on Zee Network comprising Zee TV, Zee Cinema and Zee News, which are owned by ATL (Asia Today Ltd.). With ATL based in Hong Kong, major revenue of Zee Telefilms (from export of original software) is in foreign currency.
Presently the company has 20,000 hours of software in its library. Zee Telefilms is the sole canvassing agent for booking and selling advertisement slots throughout India for the three Zee channels.
As of now Zee Telefilms has major expansion plans which include investments in the DTH, Internet and print media. Investment will also have to make in ZMWL to convert it from analog to digital mode which will save on transmission cost.
The company plans to offer 8 channels through the DTH bouquet. These will be pay channels, which will give Zee Telefilms subscription revenues. Most of the regional language channels that the company would be introducing would be through the DTH route.
Zee Telefilms has entered into the Internet business through E-Connect Ltd. (its wholly owned subsidiary). E-Connect Ltd. will be an ISP and a Portal company having multiple accesses
The company has merged with Zee Multimedia WorldWide (ZMWL) and has acquired Star TV's stake in ATL.
