Alcatel found its calling. One of France's largest industrial companies, Alcatel is a leading global supplier of high-tech equipment for telecommunications networks. Core network switching and transmission systems for wireline and wireless networks for carriers and enterprises account for most of its sales. Other communications products include cell phones, communications cable, and satellite equipment. The company also manufactures transport automation equipment and provides a wide array of services. Alcatel's clients include top European telecom service providers Orange and Deutsche Telekom. Alcatel agreed to acquire rival Lucent Technologies for $13.4 billion in 2006.
